Structural Engineering (IJEP)
Your lecturer this semester will be Nikolaos Reppas (nikolaos.reppas@strath.ac.uk) and Marco de Angelis (marco.de-angelis@strath.ac.uk).
Welcome to the module CL340
This class aims to give you an understanding of the material and structural behaviour in construction with emphasis on stress-strain analysis. The first half of the class will consider how the concepts of shear strength, Mohr circles can be applied to engineered and natural materials in order to be used to construction. It introduces also geology with an emphasis on engineering geology and practical rock mechanics in order to understand how surface and tectonic processes produce textures within a rock mass that are of relevance to engineers.
The second half of the class will introduce and aim to instil an understanding of the main analysis methods for statically indeterminate structures. The class will introduce the most widely adopted methods for structural analysis, which will include the principle of virtual work, the method of forces and the stiffness method. This tools are instrumental to develop a critical and independent understanding of structural analysis not tight to any particular software.
The class format will be online and you will find additional information, support material and weekly quiz on this myplace page.
For the first half please feel free to provide feedback and ask questions by contacting me via email (Nikolaos Reppas: Nikolaos.Reppas@strathc.ac.uk)
For the second half feel free to provide feedback and ask questions by contacting via email Marco de Angelis (marco.de-angelis@strath.ac.uk)
We will do our best to accommodate any sensible request and support your learning.
Your lecturers this semester will be:
1st half Nikolaos Reppas (nikolaos.reppas@strath.ac.uk) and
2nd half Marco de Angelis (marco.de-angelis@strath.ac.uk).
